It has a magnificent church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, often referred to as the Cathedral of the Peak, which was built in the 14th century and stands as a land mark for miles around.\u00a0 It has a good range of shops, pubs and tearooms and is famous for its well dressings..<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> It\u2019s known locally as \u2018Tidza\u2019 and the locals are known as &#8216;Sawyeds&#8217;, after a traditional story about a farmer whose cow got its head stuck in a gate. Legend has it that the farmer freed the beast by sawing off its head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Enjoy a cup of tea and a home-made cake in one of the lovely tearooms then stroll\u00a0along to Tideswell Dale which leads down to Litton Mill and Cressbrook. It&#8217;s a Derbyshire Wildlife Nature Reserve, noted for some beautiful rare flowers and Toadstones. Tideswell makes an ideal base for walking and climbing and is an ideal base for exploring the peak district\u2019s attractions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visittideswell.co.uk\">www.visittideswell.co.uk<\/a> for information on local events, walks, accommodation and a lot more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cressbrook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-83\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cosycotts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Peak-district1.jpg\" alt=\"Peak district1\" width=\"191\" height=\"290\" \/><\/strong>Said to be Derbyshire\u2019s most picturesque village, Cressbrook perches on the hillside on the cusp of Millers Dale, Monsal Dale and Cressbrook Dale overlooking the river Wye.\u00a0 It was built to supply workers for Arkwright&#8217;s Cotton mill (1779) but today the mill has closed and it forms a peaceful enclave with a fine hall and ex-mill workers cottages on its charming terraced slopes. Cressbrook Dale is a national nature reserve and a place of great natural beauty where rare wild flowers and prolific wildlife including\u00a0 badgers abound.<\/p>\n<p>It is a place to unwind and relax and enjoy the magnificent views. Indeed time seems to pass more slowly in Cressbrook, and this phenomena is locally referred to as \u2018Cressbrook time\u2019 which can be quite a bit behind Greenwich mean time !<\/p>\n<p>Beloved by climbers the Ravens Dale crags and Rubicon Wall at Water Cum Jolly provide challenging climbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Litton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This hamlet lies between Cressbrook and Tideswell and features stocks on the village green. The ancient field systems which surround Litton are notable; most of the fields are long and narrow and date from the enclosures act of 1760 where strips of larger fields were allocated to families to farm.\u00a0 See the dry stone walls which enclose them and the stocks on the village green.\u00a0 The Red Lion pub serves good pub food..<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_84\" style=\"width: 372px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84\" class=\"wp-image-84\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cosycotts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Peak-district-litton-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"Peak district litton\" width=\"362\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cosycotts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Peak-district-litton-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cosycotts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Peak-district-litton.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-84\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winter in Litton showing the Red Lion pub<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Local Shopping<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> Local shopping is excellent in Tideswell and the local market towns of Chesterfield, Bakewell and Buxton.\u00a0 About 45 minutes drive takes you to Sheffield (Meadow hall),\u00a0Manchester or Derby where all the facilities of major cities are available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Don\u2019t load up the car with a supermarket shop for your visit, local shops are excellent, why not shop when you arrive\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There is a super award winning village shop in Litton which is owned and run by the village.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In Tideswell there are a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">great range of shops which specialise in fresh local produce:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> The Co-op, opens 7 days a week from 8am to 10pm and stocks all the basic food and home items you\u2019ll need during your stay.. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There\u2019s\u00a0 also a greengrocers, a\u00a0 bakery, a fish and chip shop, hairdressers, restaurants and\u00a0 caf\u00e9s,\u00a0 a Chemist, a knitting\/craft shop and an interesting secondhand book store.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> <strong>Eateries<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff; font-size: 10pt;\"><em><strong>The Merchants Yard<\/strong><\/em><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Tideswell.
